Confluent Surgical bought by Tyco unit for $245M
July 18, 2006. Confluent Surgical Inc. of Waltham has been purchased by a division of Tyco International Ltd. for $245 million. Confluent is a developer of polymer-based technology used in sprayable surgical sealants and anti-adhesion products. It markets a neurosurgical sealant that was the first product of its kind to receive Food and Drug Administration approval for use in cranial repair. This sealant, along with several other products in the company’s pipeline, is intended to improve patient outcomes by reducing leaks or adhesions across various surgical specialties. The Tyco division that bought Confluent is U.S. Surgical, a division of Tyco Healthcare, which is based in Mansfield. Tyco International is a worldwide concern based in Bermuda, with offices in Exeter, N.H. Over the next six years, the biosurgery market – which is estimated at $900 million – is expected to double in size, industry analysts say.
